He EARNED $300m from boxing. However to say that he HAD $300m is downright irresponsible.

Let's take these factors into account;

Taxation (I don't know the American revenue system but I would be suprised if it was more than 40%. As far as I know, during most of Tyson's time, America has been run by politicans who have favoured the 'stand on your own feet' policy and tried to limit taxes as much as they possible could. A socialist government would have had higher taxes but I doubt he paid more than 40%. Also remember, this taxes were deduced from his purses before he got the money by the IRS. So a $100m purse would be $60m after the IRS have taken their cost. There is no way Tyson could have avoided it whatsoever). So that is $120,000,000 written off in taxes.

Two divorces: Tyson had some $35m (rough calculation) by 1988. A large chunk of that would have gone to Robin Givens (despire her saying she didn't get anything). Let's assume she got somewhere between $10-$15m from her divorce.

Monica Turner also filed for divorce and wanted $7m. She later recinded (after Tyson's financial problems) and I think he ended up paying something like $4m in total; from Etienne and Lewis fights.

So for argument's sake; that's some $15,000,000 written off there

Don King; He allegedly stole $100m from Tyson. Factor this in too and we're at a very high number.

Trainers take a 10% cut from their fighters; so that's $30,000,000 in trainer wages from a 20 year career.

Then all the hangers on, shopping sprees, houses, lawsuits and so on and we're looking at high numbers too. However, we won't factor this into the equation as this is Mike's personal business.

So let's see;

$120,000,000
$15,000,000
$100,000,000
$30,000,000

= $265,000,000 effectively removed from Tyson's earnings. He's essentilly left with a little over 11% of what he had earned from his career purses. It's his money so let him spending but don't let the gutter press let you believe he blew $300,000,000. Factor in all those things and Tyson isn't as irresponsible as the press might have you believe. Yes he wasted a lot of money and he probably SPENT like he had $300,000,000 (which caused many problems) but even so, he never had $300,000,000 to blow in the first place.

Well said Casper. Let the media tell it and it's like Mike was given $300million at 1 time and just blew it all over a 20 year span. As far as taxes goes, when U make that kind of money here in the states, a person is usually in the 36% percent bracket last time I checked. So 40% percent isnt a bad estimate. Out of $300 million estimated gross income over 20 years, Mike probably only had about 100 million spendable cash over 20 years after all his taxes, sanctioning fees, and Team Tyson expenses. I won't even get into all other monies he had to fork over. I'd say today he is still worth between 5 and 7million net. Thats not alot when U dont have million dollar paydays coming in anymore and U have to make it stretch for the next 30+ years. I think Mike has learned the meaning of modesty and is taking what little paying work he can get in order not to spend what few million dollars he has left.

Peace

The ironic thing is that Mike is now much happier with much much much less money to his name than he ever was. No more vultures around him, no more King, no more training or fighting to do. He's at peace. It's funny too, no more women are accusing him of rape either! How funny. I wonder why(?)

He's declared bankruptcy, which isn't the same as being 'broke'. Also Tyson is always engaged in some sort of activity, media engagements, travelling the world, endorsing some event and so on so he'll never be broke ever. As long as he is breathing, someone will be talking about him and wanting to use him for something. He'll never die a pauper.

Yeah no sh it. I remember telling my mom, back before the Lewis fight, that the only way he can get rid of these vultures, leeches and scadalous women is to either go broke or trick the world into thinking he is broke. Like U said, when the money runs out, so do the "FRIENDS" and accusers. I agree that he is much happier without all those different people in his life

Peace

When you speak of Mike Tyson, state it as Mike Tyson. I hate the way people say oh Mike, as if they know him perosnally. This is Mike Tyson you are talking about.

Its Mike Tyson.

Out of all sportsmen/women, Mike has earned more money from boxing than any other sports person has from their respective sport. I'm not talking about endorsements or any other monies people make. I'm talking about money solely made from sport.

The purses Mike used to offically be paid were incredible. I say "officially" because with Don King, Rory Holloway & John Horne on the scene, Mike would probably have actually got paid nowhere near the amount that was written down or disclosed on documents.

Tyspn was paid $30,000,000 for the first bout with Evander. I've read/heard King took $9,000,000 out of the pursue for his share, which is completely ridiculous. Horne/Holloway both took $3,000,000 each. That's effectively half his purse gone before Mike has received any money, paid his trainer and training expenses and tax. It's effectively robbing someone, which King, Horne & Holloway did.

Tyson may/may not have got along nicely with Bill Cayton, but at the very least, from a financial point-of-view, it would have been in his favour to have stayed with Bill. Mike was a notoriously big spender, but Bill would not have robbed or even try to have steal from him.

lol, Tysontalk world title, ocampo5422 "Pride and Money" vs. Kool "Truth Hurts" 12 rounds of boxing, for the right to call Mike Tyson simply Mike! The loser will have to refer to him as Michael Gerard Tyson everytime from now till eternity.

Anyway... Lots of athletes are called by first name, it's no big deal. Just now, watching, nobody calls Kobe by his full or last name only. It's just Kobe mostly to fans.

Yep. He is Mike Tyson.

Also referred to by his surname, Tyson. Also referred to his first name, Mike.

When you call somebody KOOL, do you say their full name, even if you are not familiar with them? Of course you do. You don't say "Hey Steven Michael Smith, come over here please"

Well, you might do. Do you?
