Welterweight champ will be spokesathlete for the Xbox 360 and PSP editions of EA's pugilist fest.

Electronic Arts has announced the cover athlete (pictured) for their latest boxing game, Fight Night Round 3. The plucky pugilist in question will be Oscar De La Hoya, the former WBC & WBA super welterweight champion, WBC welterweight and super lightweight champion, and 1992 Olympic gold medalist.

The 34-year-old will grace the covers of the Xbox 360 and PSP versions of the game, which are due out next month. "It's exciting to be contributing to a project that pushes the popularity of boxing to a new level and to a new audience," he said in a statement.

February will also see the release of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of Fight Night Round 3. Those editions of the title will feature two kings of the ring--fellow welterweight champs Arturo "Thunder" Gotti and "Irish" Micky Ward--as cover boxers.

even though Toney doesn't currenlt hold the title. I think he's prolly the most talented heavyweight today. I'd say either Toney, Mayweather, or Hatton should cover it.

I think EA considered Toney, but probably didn't chose him because of that failed steriod test.
Oscar will probably lose in his next fight. It's almost a doom-scenario to be on the cover of fight night (look what happened to RJJ and Hopkins after they were on the cover)...

That's right. Someone who sells and is wellknown with boxing fans.

I agree. Mayweather is one of the rising stars in boxing now. He would do right on the cover. Winky Wright could also be possible, but i think the general fans think he's too boring. And you also have Ricky Hatton...

But they always put fighters on the cover that is on the game so if the fighter isn't in the game then he can't be on the cover

It would be soo sweet to have tyson on the cover. Atleast it would sell then. De La Hoya is kind of a hasbeen. Tyson in a way too, but he's still the biggest boxer out there.

Even more sad that Tyson is not even in it Confused

That sucks, I watched some of the game play videos and I noticed that too, jabs and combos were fluid but so slow. Like they were in the 20th round or something. The graphics look amazing of course, I just hope they didn't spend all their time on the eye candy and forget what made it the best boxing sim ever.

Either way, I'm gonna wait for the PS3 version, plus it'll give me enough time to check out some reviews and what not on how the final product is.
