McCall was a big crack-addict and served prison time. I guess at some point he was just emotionally confused and started crying.

One of the strangest moments in boxing i've ever seen.

Quote:
Former heavyweight champion Oliver McCall now admits he wasn't using some bizarre strategy when he stopped fighting and started crying in the ring during his fight against Lennox Lewis for the vacant World Boxing Council heavyweight championship at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1997.
Because McCall wasn't defending himself, referee Mills Lane stopped the fight in the fifth round and awarded Lewis the victory in one of the strangest heavyweight championship fights in history. The result was a technical knockout and not a disqualification, as many people think.
McCall explained at a news conference the next morning that his unusual behavior was part of his fight plan, which everybody had a hard time believing. He said his strategy was like Muhammad Ali's "rope-a-dope." McCall said he was essentially playing "possum" in an effort to get Lewis to throw a lot of punches and tire himself out, then McCall could stop Lewis. Yeah, right.
But 3 1/2 years later, McCall will meet Sedreck Fields in a 10-round fight on a Don King Productions undercard tonight at the Paris hotel, and McCall now apparently thinks honesty is the best policy.
"Those statements were actually false statements," McCall said.
Asked why he claimed the crying was some wild strategy, McCall said: "I don't want to dwell on that. I am at a point I want to leave that alone. It happened. It's over. We can't do anything about it."
McCall, of Martinsville, Va., said he suffered a "breakdown."
"I was stressed and depressed," he said.
McCall was examined July 31 by a psychiatrist, Dr. Jose Alappatt of Warren, Ohio, who said he watched a tape of the McCall-Lewis fight.
"His behavior at the arena appeared to be that of a person who was too stressed out or depressed," Alappatt said. "He admits that he had a problem with drugs and alcohol in 1997."
Alappatt gave McCall a sparkling report.
"He said he has been completely clean of any addiction to drugs and alcohol at the present time," Alappatt said. "He has stopped abusing his body and has resumed a healthy lifestyle with training and exercising. I don't see any indications of any depression, confusion or any thought disorders. All his mental faculties appeared to be intact."
McCall, 35, said he wanted to get back in the top 10 of the ratings.
"I feel great," he said. "You'll see that in the ring. I don't know if it will, but I want it to go three or four rounds so the people and the media can see. I feel fantastic. I want to come here and redeem myself."
McCall said he even thinks some good can come out of the weird Lewis incident.
"I am stronger mentally," he said. "It made me stronger."
One thing the likeable McCall has is a fine sense of humor, as does Nevada commission chairman Dr. Elias Ghanem.
Upon hearing the glowing psychiatric report at Thursday's commission meeting, Ghanem said: "It was a beautifully written letter. I don't think I could pass it like that."
McCall got a kick out of Ghanem's line.
McCall showed he could display levity even as the commissioners were discussing his licensing, calling the listing of his fight-by-fight record "my rap sheet."
Commission Luther Mack said McCall's antics against Lewis were an insult to the state of Nevada, and McCall quickly said, "I think so, too."
When asked in his hotel room his opinion of King, McCall laughed and said: "What a question. Right as of now, we're getting along pretty good. I wasn't down on King. King didn't have anything to do with what I did in the ring."
McCall said he was negotiating with King to fight the winner of Saturday's Evander Holyfield-John Ruiz fight at the Paris hotel for the vacant World Boxing Association heavyweight championship.
"I am on the verge of the biggest boxing comeback in boxing history," McCall said. "I came from the depths. A lot of people didn't think I would box again. I am humble. I am patient. I am going to take advantage of the opportunity while it presents itself."
McCall stopped Lewis in the second round to win the WBC heavyweight title in 1994 but lost it to Frank Bruno on a decision a year later.

Me and my brother where talking about that fight the other day, and he said thank god, that was Lennox Lewis in that ring, when Mcall broke down.

Because Mike Tyson would of took, Mccalls actions the wrong, way, and destoryed him.

Mike Tyson should not be tamper wity menatlly in the ring.

I love that man

Lennox Lewis showed that he was a gentleman, in teh ring that night.

What Lewis did was catch McCall cleanly with his right hand and nothing happened, the ref stopped the fight when McCall would not fight back

McCall had Lewis number. If it wasn't for the "gift" stoppage we all never would have seen Lennox Lewis last title reign. McCall would have stopped him for the second time.

Too bad McCall didn't had his head straight.
Drugs is bad,...mkaay.

Btw,...i heard McCall was a sparring partner of Mike Tyson and Tyson had the upper hand of McCall quite often.
