Whichever way you carve it up, the Mike Tyson story is one of the great human tragedies of our time.
I have to say that, although Tysons early professional career has probably been looked on with rose coloured specs, when he was with Jimmy Jacobs, Bill Cayton, Kevin Rooney & Steve Lott, he was looked after, he was paid the money he was supposed to get, he had guidance, both personally & professionally, & his career had some direction. As soon as he bolted to Don Kings camp, everything was a shambles, because the way King controlled Mike was to let him do as he pleased no matter how bizarre. & as a big Tyson fan, I have to say that Mike has got to take a lot of responsibilty for that himself.
Mike knew King was a crook, he said it himself before they hooked up. But with the D'mato connection, there was a code of conduct, a set of rules, with King, there were no rules, & I guess that appealed to Mike. Of course, the early years weren't without incident, but they were small potatoes compared to what transpired later on.........So all in all, a terrible waste of talent & a terrible waste of a young life IMO.

Indeed.
Tyson certainly could have acheived so much more had his Career progressed like any other Boxers career would. However, with Personal tragedies at the worst times, and his own personal short-comings, It's amazing looking back how Tyson even DID acheive what he did, even POST-Prison
i have thought about all these statements & i agree i also believe i'm happy it was douglas that whopped him rather than anyone else. ferguson called the upset amazingly whilst sparring with tyson at the time . we shouldn't be greedy i think mike has given us more than enough ,there will allways be the critics but luckily for mike & his fans we all have something we call television which is our evidence & thats all we need to see this once best ever fighter in his short prime. i think mike had a great career along with roy jones both were too good for there best opponents & both have fallen dramatically & both could have faked knockdowns against there best opp. & come back to ko in later rounds thus putting them both higher in the alltime rankings
