I'm a big Chavez fan and at the time of the fight I hoped that Chavez would wear him down and knock Whittaker out. The air of invincibility was taken out of Chavez wings that night as most thought Whittaker won.
From memory I had Chavez ahead by a point or so but I was totally biased and favour pressure fighters which is probably why I also had Hagler beating Leonard!
What I will say about Whittaker is that I appreciated him as he got older and marveled at his sheer artistry in the ring. The fight I really enjoyed was against Azumah Nelson who I hoped would beat him up but he could not get close. Whittaker had the skill of being able to stand in front of fighters and not get hit better than anyone else in his era and in most other era's (Willie Pep may have given him a run for his money).
Shame about the drugs etc but I agree that it was at the tail end of his career and I must admit I was surprised. Not sure where he is in his life now but I hope he kept his money. Boxing wise, an absolute legend and one of the great p4p fighters of all time. |
