I've come close, well sort of. I knew some guys in the Tyson camp back in the late '90s..Well, they were from the old "Team Tyson" (some family affair that was, huh?), but they still had contacts in his camp.

I had a correspondence with Rudy Gonzalez, Mike's old bodyguard/chauffer, and a couple other old friends of Mike's. Anyways, I got a hold of the address of Mike's LA lawyers, wrote him many times in hopes that he would write back to me (I was a naive kid, 16 at the time). Well sure enough, one day I get a call from Rudy saying that Mike got one of my letters and was eager to talk to me. Why, I don't know. Got my hopes up and everything. Never got that call, but when Mike went to jail on the BS charge of assaulting a motorist, one day in March '99, I got a letter from him. On the return address was "Mike Tyson 9898 Montgomery Detention Center, Rockville, Maryland." Nothing too long, just a simple thank you for supporting him and what not.

One of the things I always say when I defend Mike--which happens a lot--is that you ask the majority of people who've come in contact with him in public, and they'll tell you he's a really cool and gracious to people. Which I think says a lot--there are a lot bigger assholes on this planet than Mike Tyson. Obviously, that's not to say he can't be a royal asshole himself, of course.

Discuss:

'Cause I knew I would fawkin kill them if they fawked with me

I think it's very cool he wrote you, he probably answered alot of his fanmail when he was in jail as it was the only time he had time. I think it impossible to classify mike as either an asshole or an angel, he is made up purely of contradictions and seems to be extremely moody.

I won't say manic depressive as that is just been incorrectly labeled on him, but he definetely is something close. I do believe however, alot of the asshole acting back then was just becuase he's a good salesman and knew how to sell fights back then. Captured 100% of the audience, those who hated him came and so did those who loved him, can't want more from a boxer.

I was very close to meeting Mike on may 20th this year in stockholm, sweden. It was planned that Mike would be the ref, for a k1 fight in stockholm between his old victim Fransoa Botha and swedens j?rgen krut. Swedish newspapers wrote several months before that everything was set. Mike would come to Sweden. I was so happy and thrilled about those news, i was very excited already several months before the big k1 event. I wrote about the news here on Tysontalk, thinking i would meet my hero. I even bought a 250$ ringside ticket for the event haha, and to my great dissapointment, Mike canceled his visit to sweden very shortly before the actual weekend. I would never pay 250 dollars to see k1, if i knew Mike would not come i would've bought a 100 dollar seat ticket instead. Mike attended the Barrera-Juarez fight instead and i understand him completely, i would do the same. I still had a fun night without meeting my idol.

However, i got to meet his former KO victim, Botha, BTW the knockout Mike delivered on Botha is one of my favourite Tyson KO's. I shock his hand and talked briefly with him and took a picture of him and me. I could'nt resist but staring at his chin thinking to myself "thats the chin my idol cracked with that short, excellent right hand" 8)
Botha is a friendly and likeable person though. Hopefully i will be lucky to meet my idol one day in the future. Swedes LOVE Mike Tyson regardless if he's fighting or not. I think there was about 15 000 people at that K1 event in stockholm and probably atleast 1/3 of all the people that was there bought their tickets, JUST TO SEE MIKE TYSON. Im sure Mike would've recieved the biggest paycheck a ring referee has ever recieved had he showed up, most likely even more money than botha and krut earned for fighting each other 😀
I will always remember the night Tyson beated Brian Nielsen in Copenhagen, Denmark, in october of 2001. me and a couple of friends went to a big sportsbar in stockholm to see the fight live on a huge screen. I always support a scandinavian brother but of course i didn't this night, hell, even if Mike fought a guy from my own neighbourhood, i'd still root for my idol, always! anyway, the amazing thing is, i thought that most of the swedes in the sportsbar that night would cheer for Brian Nielsen since he's a fellow scandinavian. to my big surprise when i entered the bar and the undercard fights were on, the place was packed with hundreds of swedes shouting out "Tyson! Tyson! Tyson!" it was a magic night for sure! i was amazed that everyone in there supported Mike. People were going crazy when Mike walked towards the ring and when Mike floored Nielsen in the third round the place erupted! i swear, it was comparable to when soccer hooligans celebrate their teams win, it was crazy, i got goosebumps. One could think that it was swedens own Ingmar Johansson that was fighting. It was a magic night and the night that i understood how much swedish fans appreciate Mike Tyson. Mike is aware that he has a huge fanbase in Sweden and scandinavia.

Regarding the opinion people have about Tyson as a person, outside the ring. I never bought any of the bullshit that has been written about him in the media, the bad rumors etc. Sure, he said some things infront of cameras and reporters that i think he shouldn't have said. But he was a very smart bussinessman after his 3 years in prison. 3 years for a crime he didn't commit IMO. I think that Mike most likely fucked the living shit out of that pussy that night in the hotelroom, maybe he was a little too rough and wild with the girl but i don't think Mike ever raped her, maybe she said "stop" from pain or something when Mike was already pumping that dirty snatch and was just about to finnish the job, who knows. But Mike didn't need to rape someone, he just got set up by a good actor and a liar. I saw a snapshot of Mike from a policestation in Florida, probably a year or two ago, i remember that picture Mike had to take to register as a sex offender, he looked really sad in that picture, it must be very humiliating for him, i really felt for him. when he was the champ in the 80?s, Mike was a hero to alot of people and in the media. after his rape sentence and the holyfield fights, Mike quickly got portrayed as a monster, like he was not a human being anymore, but an animal. I still remember an american magazine that called Tyson "sleazebag of the week".

I`ve heard several different swedish fighters, commentators and reporters opinion of Mike Tyson.
former heavyweight champion Ingmar Johansson always loved Tyson, he was one of the scandinavian commentators for PPV boxing from the late 80?s to the late 90?s and every other day, a swedish fight channel shows Tysons fights where Ingo is a commentator, Ingo seems almost totally disinterested in most fights that he's commentating except for the Tyson fights. when tyson fought Bruno the second time, Ingmar was actually sleeping in the studio during most of the undercard fights, he was completely silent for a very long time untill steffen tengstad asks Ingo "or what do you say about this woman fight with christy martin coming up next Ingo?" Ingo wakes up and says "Yeah it's just complete garbage" haha. later when the tyson-bruno fight is getting closer Ingo can be heard becoming more and more excited in the studio. when the fight starts it is clear to anyone that watches the fight that everybody in the studio cheers for Tyson, all the commentators wants Tyson to win and they go crazy when Tyson stops Bruno in 3, shouting and yelling in the studio "yeeees, yeeeeeees! he did it!! once again! he's even better than before he went to prison what a miracle!!!"
also before the first holyfield fight Ingo Johansson is in las vegas to watch the fight and he attends the weigh in. right after Mike has weighed himself he walks up to his friend steffen tengstad and Ingo johansson and says to Ingmar "i've seen many of your fights, you're an old world champ from sweden, you had a great right hand, like BOOM! and down they went" hahaha
when the fight got started Ingmar with his great eye for boxing quickly noticed the "skillful" headbutts, low blows and other illegal tactics used by holyfield constantly during the fight, fully aware that such tactics can be very frustrting and fight ending. as the rounds comes to an end Ingo becomes more and more quiet and when the ref stopped the fight ingo just says "this was really sad" Ingo just had good things to say about Mike Tyson, steffen tengstad also always said Tyson is a great guy outside the ring, the two are good friends since Mike started his carrer.

another example is former pro heavyweight fighter from sweden H?kan Brock who lost a points decision to Mike Tyson in 1983 or 84 at Malm? boxing cup in malm?, sweden.
H?kan says that him and Tyson hung around for a few days and quickly became friends after their fight at the boxing tournament (for those of you who didn't know, Tyson won, i think 3 fights and won the whole tournament in his weightclass in malm? sweden)
H?kan praises Tyson in all interviews where they ask about Mike and their friendship. Accordingly to H?kan, Mike Tyson is a "warmhearted, funny and friendly individual" He also says that Mike is very smart and that he was amazed by the great memory Mike has.
In the mid - late 90?s after Tysons 3 year prison visit, H?kan attends one of Mikes fights and by this time H?kan and Mike hadn't met or spoken to each other for almost 15 years. H?kan was sure that Mike would not recognize him after such long time. After the fight when H?kan walks around the dressing rooms he suddenly hear Mike Tyson yelling "hey!! H?kan! H?kan! he turns around and there he spots Tyson smiling at him, so they start to talk to each other and it turns out that Mike remembered their short time together 15 year earlier, clear as water! Tyson even remembered his name after such a long time.

Last year, a week or so before the Tyson - McBride fight after a Tyson workout, swedish reporters gets a couple of minutes with Mike infront of the camera. Mike and one of the reportes starts to talk boxing and Mike asks how Ingo Johansson is doing these days. The reporter tells Mike that Ingo suffers from alzheimers and is very dizzy in the head. Mike gets a worried face and says "oh no, how sad man" he then starts to ask the reporter questions and talks about Ingmar. A few guys from Tysons crew walks by and tells Mike to hurry up, apparently they were in a hurry for something, Mike tells them "no we have an interesting discussion here, we talk about an old champion thats ill these days" Mike continues to talk and asks the reporter different questions. Tyson mentiones "lillen" Eklund from sweden who was a european heavyweight champ in the 80?s and says that he heard that "lillen" had added on quite a few pounds, Mike was very polite and friendly towards the reporters from sweden and thanked the reporter for the interesting discussion, the quick 2 or 3 planned questions became a 10 minute discussion. then as Mike says goodbye and walks towards his waiting crew, he turns around and shouts at the reporter "don't forget to say hello and thanks from me to all my fans in Sweden, and say hi to my friend steffen"

Miss Washington should know that God never forgets.

Thank you, Turk15 and Gibbo.
This is a great forum, i don't post very often but i often comes by here to read some news about Mike Tyson. I love this site and sometimes i just feel like contributing with some information.

Slugger, no i never asked Botha what Mike's right hand felt like, i sure felt like asking haha but Botha had a look in his face like he thought i was gonna throw a punch at him or something when i walked up to him and started talking to him, i never had any intentions like that. Anyway im sure Fransoa heard the birds sing and the bells ring when he got smashed with that very powerful, short right hand. Awsome shot! 😀

I met Mike in 2004 in Las Vegas at the Madalay bay resort/casino, when the Klutschko-Brewster fight was in town. I got a pic with him, if someone could tell me how to post, I will put it up. He was very very personable. When I asked him if I could get a picture with him, he said "sure brother". Totally made my trip. I have met a lot of fighters, went to the IBHOF up in Canastota this past summer for the the big weekend event, and out of everyone I have come in contact with, Tyson was right up there with the most friendly famous fighters.

steffen tengstad is not what I would call a fan of Tyson....in the Holyfield fight he was routing for Holyfield and constantly reffering to Tyson as being a big mouth and not being able to back up all his talk. Also in other Tyson fight he has made some odd remarks.

But Ingo loves Mike atleast thats my impression.

I met Mike Tyson when he was about 13 years old. Matt Baranski had invited my husband and I over for a barbecue and Mike was also invited. My husband Cliff White used to ride to the Catskills with Matt, so that Cliff could spar with Mike. I remember Cliff coming home and going on and on about how this strong young man was going to become one of the most greatest boxers in the world. Mike gave me a hand shake and to this day, I remember how gently he was when he shook my hand, I couldn't believe that this was the same boxer that my husband told me about. Our sons both had a pair of childrens boxing gloves and Mike signed them, unfortunely we didn't keep them. Frown
