Mike Tyson and the final bout of his career

By Jenna J - Iron Mike Tyson, the youngest man to ever claim a portion of the heavyweight championship and a fighter once known as the “baddest man on the planet”, officially retired from boxing June 11, 2005 after a surprising defeat to unheralded Kevin McBride. The fight itself saw the former Champion struggling to land his shots, getting fatigued rather quickly and ultimately fouling his opponent in more ways than one in what was becoming a competitive fight. At the start of the 6th round, Tyson sensing some urgency put forth an attack on McBride in an effort to end the match, but saw this attempt like many of his others on the night ending with the much larger man tying him up. This was the beginning of the end for Tyson, as he let frustrations overtake him and began to foul McBride. First came a warning from Joe Cortez for trying to break McBride's arm in a clinch, and then came a two point deduction for an intentional head butt that left Kevin bleeding from the eye. Undeterred by what was happening in the ring, McBride continued doing what he had done all night and that was simply tying up, leaning on, and hitting Mike with short shots on the inside. At the end of the 6th round, McBride leaned on top of Tyson once again, this time causing Mike to collapse to the canvas where he struggled to get back to his feet. Once back to his corner, his trainer Jeff Fenech decided Mike had enough, and called a halt to the match, leaving the once most feared boxer in the world retiring on his stool.

Source: hollywoodreporter.com

HBO is in the process of casting for a boxing drama pilot called 'Da Brick', which is will reflect aspects of Tyson's upbringing.

Former boxing heavyweight champion Mike Tyson is attached as nonwriting executive producer.

Mike Tysons life is so eventfull, that no autobiography has been able to cover all events. An ongoing series could therefore work as there are a lot of events in Tysons life to base a show around.

It’s always a pleasure to listen to Kevin Rooney talk about his old charge Mike Tyson, who in his prime years in the 1980′s, was the most exciting, destructive heavyweight force in boxing history. Check this out…

BoxingInsider: When was Mike at his prime best?

Kevin Rooney: ”When he beat Michael Spinks. He just wiped him out. Before that he beat Tony Tucker and Tyrell Biggs, the main fighters back then. He wiped out Tony Tucker – he won a 12 round decision, I mean, he kicked his ass. Then he knocked out Tyrell Biggs. He knocked out Larry Holmes. Then he fought Tony Tubbs in Japan – he starched him in two rounds. Then he knocked out Michael Spinks in 90 seconds. 90 seconds. It wasn’t a joke. I mean, he knocked him out. So I think that fighter, in my opinion, could have and should have probably beaten anybody that was in his path. Anybody including Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali. Well, I’ll give Muhammad Ali and Rocky – well it could have been different, I mean, Rocky punched like hell. Muhammad punched like hell. Rocky had beat everyone. Muhammad had heart and was hard to hit. The fights would have been interesting. But I believe that Mike would have come out the better. Because he punched very hard [laughs]. Mike…I believe that Mike is one of the hardest punchers in history. He punches harder than Rocky. Punches harder than Joe Louis. Punches harder than George Foreman.”

CANASTOTA, N.Y. (AP) -- The once-proclaimed "baddest man on the planet" fumbled for words that wouldn't come. Sylvester Stallone knew exactly what Mike Tyson was feeling.

Both were inducted in the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Sunday, Tyson for his reign as heavyweight champion of the world, Stallone for his "Rocky" movie series, and the fans turned out in droves on a rainy, overcast afternoon.

Thousands packed every corner of the induction grounds, and Tyson was no match for the emotion of the moment.

"I've got to be goofy about this or I'll get emotional up here," Tyson warned before trying to honor the late trainer Cus D'Amato, who became his legal guardian after Tyson's mother died and taught him the finer points of the sweet science in a gym in Catskill, N.Y., just a 2 1/2-hour drive from the Hall of Fame.

D'Amato died in 1985, the year before the hard-punching Tyson knocked out WBC champion Trevor Berbick in the second round to become the youngest heavyweight champ in history at age 20.

Photos: SP Management

Even 5 years after he retired, Mike Tyson is still very popular in Italy. That’s why SP Management – a show-biz agency led by Stefano Pugnali – invited the former world heavyweight champion on a promotional tour of the Northern and Central areas of the country.

On Friday, a press conference was held in Milan at prestigious “Just Cavalli Cafè,” owned by fashion icon Roberto Cavalli. About 100 journalists showed up, along with other personalities. City councilman in charge of the Sports Department Alan Rizzi and International Federation of Sports Movies and TV President Franco Ascani gave Tyson the “Ghirland d’honneur,” a prestigious award which in the past was given to such sports legends as Pelè.

Also at the Just Cavalli Cafè was OPI 2000 President Salvatore Cherchi, with his son Christian, former WBC World cruiserweight champion Giacobbe Fragomeni and welterweight prospect Antonio Moscatiello. Tyson was happy to shake Fragomeni’s hand and pose with him for a photo. When asked to do the same by a visibly thrilled Moscatiello, Tyson’s answer was: “You are a fighter, you are welcome.”

On the same night, SP Management organized a special event for Tyson at Cafè Villino in Treviglio, located in the Lombardia region. Hundreds of fans showed up to meet the boxing legend and commentate with him the images of his most famous fights which were shown on a mega-screen.

On Saturday, Stefano Pugnali brought Tyson to San Giovanni Teatino, in the Abruzzi region of Central Italy, where thousands of people filled “Parco dei Cigni” (Swan’s Park) a mega-disco built inside a beautiful natural park.

Happy Birthday, Mike Tyson!

Author: Kyle Anderson

Can you believe that Mike Tyson turns 44 years old today? The man who struck fear and terror in the hearts of heavyweights all over the world hasn't boxed since 2005, but he is still in the middle of something of a career renaissance ever since his memorable (and hilarious) appearance in the hit 2009 comedy "The Hangover." (The James Toback-directed interview flick "Tyson" also helped.) Tyson is indeed a living legend and has much to celebrate.

Like most fighters, Tyson's latter-day fights have diminished his profile somewhat, but make no mistake about it: At his peak, Mike Tyson was the most dangerous man on the planet. Obviously, the dude could hit hard, but the thing that stands out on old fight tapes is the man's speed. For every punch most guys threw, Tyson could throw five or six in the same amount of time. Combine that with laser-sharp accuracy and his incredible commitment to training, and you've got yourself the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in history. (And yes, in the mythical fight between Muhammad Ali and Tyson in their respective primes, Tyson takes the victory — probably by knockout.)

At under six feet tall (and he was always listed an inch or two taller than he actually was), he was sort of small for a heavyweight, which meant that he usually gave up a reach advantage and had less of a body frame on which to pack on muscle. But that didn't stop him from scoring multiple championships.

So in honor of the baddest man on the planet, go back and watch the dude's 12 round decision victory over Donovan Ruddock in 1991 (it's one of the most underrated fights of all time).
