Done Deal: The Return of Mike Tyson to Boxing

Source: RingSideReport.com

By Geno McGahee

The heavyweight division has been considered boring by most boxing fans. The safety first, big European heavyweights have not captured the imagination of the American public, and neither have the challengers from the states that have given non-efforts or have been mediocrities to begin with. The 1990s was a great and exciting time for heavyweight boxing, and now a man that made that decade and the one before it incredibly exciting is coming back to boxing.

Iron Mike Tyson, 50-6, 44 KO’s, has been out of the ring since an embarrassing sixth round TKO loss to Kevin McBride in 2005. Prior to that defeat, he was stopped by Danny Williams and a couple fights before that, he was demolished by Lennox Lewis. Times have changed, however, and Iron Mike is coming back to the sport that he helped flourish when he was mopping the floors with heavyweights in the 1980s and 90s.

According to a source close to Tyson, former Promoter Don King has a tentative deal for Tyson to return to the ring in late 2010. The initial plan is to have Tyson-Holyfield III, but there is rumored hesitation on the part of Iron Mike, and there is a plan B.

A Connecticut heavyweight named Tony Grano, former cruiserweight champ, Jean Marc Mormeck, Vinny Maddalone, and Derric Rossy have all been mentioned as potential first or second comeback opponents for Tyson.

A recent wrench may have been thrown in the works of the Tyson comeback when Don King Aide, Craig Jones, was accused of having sex with a 13 year old girl after taking pornographic pictures of her. He apparently has a history of sexual misconduct. This was important mainly because Jones was working with Tyson and King, planning the comeback tour. His removal from the plan or assumed removal, may mean that the comeback pushes to the beginning of 2011.

The King-Tyson combination is a winner, despite the fact that King fighters have reported to be losers financially in the long run. When Tyson was imprisoned for rape, he was losing popularity. His defeat to Buster Douglas and mediocre performances against Razor Ruddock took away the invincibility belief that the public had. After four years in prison, King resumed control of Tyson and promoted a Pay Per View showdown with Peter McNeeley.

McNeeley did not belong in the ring with a top 50 fighter, let alone Mike Tyson, but the promotion was one of the top promotions in boxing history and it was in large part due to the genius of Don King. Even rival promoter, Bob Arum, noted that King’s handling of the promotion was “genius.”

King knew matchmaking and put Tyson in with Frank Bruno (WBC Champ) and quickly got a title around the waist of his popular power-house. Instead of taking on Lennox Lewis, a fight that Tyson, at that stage, would have probably lost, King would set up a match with Bruce Seldon, the WBA titlist.

Mike Tyson involved in scuffle with paparazzi photographer

Mike Tyson was involved in a scuffle with paparazzi photographer Tony Echevarria on Wednesday (11Nov09) as he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on a flight with his wife, Lakiha Spicer, and their 10-month-old daughter Milan.
Both men made citizen's arrests on each other and were later transported to a police station, where they were booked for identical misdemeanour battery charges. The former heavyweight champion insists it was the photographer who instigated the altercation by "attacking" him.
Tyson's spokesperson says, "Mr. Tyson was travelling with his wife and 10-month-old child without security when he was attacked by an overly aggressive paparazzi (sic). The truth will reveal Mike acted in self-defence as a father protecting his child. We are confident justice will prevail."

'There's a lot of different versions to the story,' Los Angeles Airport Police Sergeant Jim Holcomb said. 'That's all going to come out later. But in this particular case, both individuals are going to be pressing charges for battery.'

'I've heard people were following him into the men's room and trying to take his picture there,' claimed Tyson's defence attorney, David Chesnoff.

'My advice to him is going to be to vigorously press charges against what everyone agrees are ridiculously aggressive photographers.'

LAX police Sgt. Jim Holcomb says Tyson cut the lensman's forehead after allegedly hitting him once, while Echevarria claims he needed five stitches after the 43 year old punched him at least four times. "When you're getting hit by Mike Tyson, it's the worst thing in the world you can imagine," he said.
It is unclear if the incident will violate the terms of Tyson's three-year probation from a drug arrest in Arizona in 2007.

If Arizona prosecutors believe Tyson crossed the legal line yesterday, they could attempt to violate his probation and he could face jail time. The worst case scenario would be 2 1/2 years in State prison.

Mike Tyson drops in on Mayor Richard Daley - video

Source: chicagotribune

Former world champion Mike Tyson paid Mayor Richard Daley a visit today and the boxing heavyweight and political heavyweight talked about youth violence, among other topics, during a 30-minute private meeting.

Tyson, who was in town for another appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, said he shared with Daley his unique perspective on the problems of inner city teens.

"Kids need to have vision, they need to have somebody they respect," said Tyson as he emerged from the mayor's office. "They respect somebody who's been through what they've been through."

Tyson, who grew up in rough parts of Brooklyn, came under the care of boxing trainer Cus D'Amato as a teenager, and has credited D'Amato with saving him from a life of crime. He said teenagers today need that same kind of care.

"Just as much energy as they put into doing and selling drugs and killing one another, that same energy can be put into something positive," Tyson said. "I was one of them. I'm that guy. I'm that guy that probably got shot the other day. I'm probably the guy that shot the guy the other day.I understand. I understand the pain."

Daley spokeswoman Jacquelyn Heard said the mayor met Tyson a few years ago, and the two hit it off. Tyson contacted the mayor's office to see if he could drop in to say hello while in town for Oprah, Heard said.

The mayor made time to meet with Tyson because the mayor believes Tyson could offer a valuable perspective into ways to solve the problems of violence in the city, Heard said

"The mayor said 'This is the guy I need to be talking to,' " Heard said.

Testers wanted for new TysonTalk video section

TysonTalk is always being worked on for improvement and in this process every suggestion by all Tyson fans are valued.

One section that has been "in progress" for a while now for Tyson-fans is a new TysonTalk video section.
This section makes it possible for Tyson fans to share Tyson videos with each other and tries to gather rare/interesting Tyson streams/videos in one place and make them easily accessible through clear categories and subcategories (e.g. quickly watch rare multi-part interviews from a certain time-period on a certain subject etc. These videos are currently scattered across forums, youtube and other video sites and need search efforts: the new video section has done all that work for you and is ready to deliver the must-see Tyson videos in two clicks).
The new video section also makes it possible for members to extract interesting quotes from Tyson videos and put these quotes directly on the Tyson quotes page.

This video module has progressed quite well and is now ready for public testing.
We would like to invite members to test this video module.
Any feedback, bug reports or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

The module can be accessed by clicking here.

Mike Tyson on Conan O'Brien Show

Mike Tyson was on the Conan O'Brien show on 27-08-09 to promote the 'Tyson' documentary now released on DVD and Blu-ray.

Tysons appearance on the Conan O'Brien show can be seen in the video below at mark 20:00:

The extra on the DVD and Blu-ray includes three high-definition featurettes, a filmmaker's commentary, a theatrical trailer, and also trailers for other Sony Pictures Classics Blu-ray releases. The featurettes are typical faire -- A Day with James Toback (16:11) consists of loosely edited excerpts from a press junket and premiere screening in Los Angeles; Iron Mike: Toback Talks Tyson (11:49), the best of the three, is a tighter Q&A about the making of the film; and James Toback on The Big Picture Show (13:08) is a promotional interview with Toback about the film.
