After several weeks of doing road work and conditioning on his own in Arizona, Iron Mike Tyson began his very first day of gym training today (Monday) at the Central Boxing Club in Phoenix. Tyson is preparing himself for a July 31st bout against likely opponent Kevin McBride (31-4-1; 26 KOs), a 31 year old journeyman who stands 6’6″ and has an 82 inch reach. As a venue has yet to be determined, Tysons manager Shelly Finkel told Fightnews that St. Louis and Louisville Kentucky are the forerunners to host Tysons first fight back since his 49 second bashing of Clifford Etienne fifteen months ago. Currently, Tysons trainer Freddie Roach is in South Africa for Virgil Hills fight against WBA cruiser champ Jean Marc Mormeck on May 22nd. In the interim, Roachs assistant Justin Fortune is working with Tyson until Roachs return. Fortune, a former Australian heavyweight (who once fought Lennox Lewis), works with Roach at his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.
