Former boxing champion Mike Tyson donated cash to a charity set up after a West Yorkshire policewoman was shot on duty.

The former world champion handed £5,000 to the Sharon Beshenivsky Fund after being touched by reports of her brutal murder.

The
38-year-old mum-of-five was killed and her colleague Teresa Milburn,of
Birstall, was hurt as they investigated reports of a robbery at a
travel agent’s shop in Bradford last November.

Tyson
was attending a dinner the night of the shooting and later declared he
wanted part of his fee to go to Sharon’s memorial fund.

He
said: “Somebody has been killed in the line of duty while we were out
at a dinner enjoying ourselves and I would like a donation from that
night’s proceeds going to the victim’s family.”

The fund has now raised more than £40,000 to help support Sharon’s children.

West Yorkshire Police Federation chairman Tom McGhie welcomed the boxer’s donation and said: “It’s a bit of a surprise but it shows everybody can be touched by the horror of something like this.”

A police spokesman added: “Sharon’s death has had a massive impact and generated messages of support and donations from across the world.”
