GL: Mike Tyson recently put out an APB on you. He wants you to help train him for a potential Antonio Tarver fight. Are you willing to work with Mike again? And how do you feel about a Tyson-Tarver fight?
Jeff Fenech: “Well if Mike wants me to walk through the desert with him barefoot I’d do that. If he wants me to help him with Tarver, I would love to do that also. Mike would beat Tarver. This is a totally different fish than Kevin McBride, he’s talking a lot. Antonio has done a great job of trying to belittle Mike Tyson so Mike can fight him. Not only do I think he’s crazy, I think he’s suicidal.”
GL: Obviously you feel he’s not ready for that Mike Tyson power?
Jeff Fenech: “No mate. And believe me he would feel it right away. If Mike punches him in the neck he might break his back. If Tarver gets in the ring, Mike is certainly going to hurt him.”
GL: What was your first reaction when you heard Tarver was calling Tyson out?
JF: “It makes me think, what are these guys trying to do. Tarver’s trying to do the best that he can and he realizes he needs Mike if he wants to make big money. But he’s putting himself in a postion to get embarrassed. He’s said some things that have Mike saying things that aren’t in his nature.”
GL: I don’t know if it wasn’t in Mike’s nature, but I know he sounded like he wanted to kick Tarver’s ass big time.
JF: “And he would mate. There would be so much anger in him that he would be fueled up to make it a simple job. It won’t be difficult. This is not a 6 foot 5 inch guy weighing over 240. This is somebody who’ll be lucky to survive the first round with Mike.”
GL: Do you think Tarver would try to survive the early onslaught and just hope Mike runs out of gas?
JF: “Against a small guy who’s not going to put pressure on Mike, he’s not going to run out of gas. I was at Caesar’s Palace for Tarver’s last fight with Roy Jones Jr. and he was putting people to sleep. I love Roy Jones and I’m a huge fan of Tarver for what he’s done but what an ordinary performance that was. Everybody talks about how people deserve money, but based on that performance nobody should’ve gotten paid.”
GL: Will Tarver’s mouth help keep Mike more motivated than he was for McBride?
JF: “Much more. I thought I had Mike working well early, but then he went back to some of the things he does. I had Mike in the best shape he could be in under the circumstance and Mike knows that, that’s why Mike’s calling for me. He knows what happened in the last fight, I did the best I could for that fight but I learned that I’m not going to allow Mike to have his ways in certain areas. Between us, we’ll talk about what needs to be done before we start a camp and with Tarver’s mouth further motivating him, I know he’s going to be able to do what he’s got to do.”
