Freddie Roach hinted last week at the possibility of Mike Tyson facing Vassily Jirov in his second comeback fight in the Fall, assuming that he gets by Danny Williams.
“I have a guy in mind, and I’m not sure he’s available. But I think Vassiliy Jirov is a good fight for Mike. He’s a tough guy, but I would like to see Mike fight him.” said Roach
It appears that now there is legit interest from Showtime to possibly make this fight a reality.
Jirov is slated to face James Toney in a rematch of their 2003 fight of the year cruiserweight war in September/October. It is unclrear if the contract has been signed to face Toney, a fight which will be showcased on HBO and would probably pay more then a potential meeting with Tyson on Showtime. On the other hand, the level of exposure and public interest in a potential meeting with Tyson would be mountains above the exposure level of a rematch with Toney.
Jirov, who is coming off a ten round decision loss to Joe Mesi, has become a hot item in a very weak heavyweight division. Jirov’s near knockout of Mesi mixed in with the fact that Jirov may have ended Mesi’s career and his war with Toney, has boxing fans demanding to see Jirov in a fight with a big heavyweight name. It is up to Jirov to decide which path he should choose.
