Tyson was indicted on Friday on felony drug possession and paraphernalia possession counts and two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of drugs. If convicted of all four charges, he could be sentenced to up to 7 1/2 years in prison, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said.
"Tyson endangered the public and himself and must be held accountable for his actions," Thomas said. "It's my hope that a conviction and prison time will help him to break his addictions and learn to comply with the law."

| Alex Ramos: Give Mike Tyson a Chance at Rehabilitation |
|
|
 |
Open Letter By Alex Ramos: I am the founder and president of the Retired Boxers Foundation. Our mission is to assist retired professional boxers in the transition from their glorious days in the ring, to a dignified retirement. We are writing this letter of support for Mike Tyson, who is a friend. Needless to say, public perception of the retired champion is based on what they read or what they see in the media. Having been in the fight game for over twenty-five years, I can tell you with confidence, that much of what is said in the press is said to promote a fight or the fighter. Most of it is fiction. Granted, there are facts that cannot be over looked, but there are also many factors that lead to the ugly side of a messed up fighter. I know from my own personal experiences as well as the experiences of the hundreds of retired fighters we have helped..
At the Retired Boxers Foundation, we choose to look at a fighter in need just like the emergency room doctor examining a gunshot victim: We don't ask the patient whose fault it was, why they were where they were, or what started the altercation. Like the ER doctor, we evaluate what is in front of us and treat what we see.
Unfortunately, law enforcement and the courts have to look at these issues and all we are saying is that we could save the taxpayers in Arizona a lot of money if they can get Mike the medical care he needs and drug treatment.
Arizona, like most states has an Intensive Dual Diagnosis Treatment program that would be more effective for Mike than jail time. It would be the more humane thing to do. I, for one, recognize Mike Tyson for the contributions he has made to us every time he entered that ring and risked his life for our entertainment. We are suggesting that a more compassionate thing to do would be to give him a chance at rehabilitation.
Basically, we are asking the people of Arizona not to jump to conclusions too quickly. While the Prosecutor wants jail time for Tyson, we believe he should be treated, not as a celebrity, but as an ordinary man who needs help. The facts support the allegation that Mike Tyson has a drug problem, and he admitted as much. By all reports, he has behaved as a gentleman both at the scene and in court.

Mike Tyson appeared before a judge early this afternoon in connection with his DUI arrest at 2 a.m. Friday morning. The former heavyweight champ was released without bail and charged with one count of narcotic drug possession - a felony. Tyson did not enter a plea and had no lawyer. No alcohol was found in his system, and a DUI charge was not filed pending toxicology tests. Under the terms of his release, the judge ordered Tyson not to leave the state of Arizona and not to possess any weapons or drink alcohol. Additionally, he cannot take drugs without a prescription, must check in with a pre-trial service officer later today and be forced to take drug and alcohol tests. Law enforcement sources told reporters that after Tyson was stopped, the former fighter was cooperative and acted like a gentleman and admitted that he had been using illegal drugs over the last few days. Drug tests revealed that Tyson was "under the influence of a depressant, stimulant and cannabis." The report also went on to say that the former fighter admitted to the arresting officer of possessing the bags of cocaine and said he: "uses anytime he can get his hands on it," and that he: "is an addict and has a problem." When leaving the courtroom Tyson refused to comment. The only comment he made while walking out of jail in the late morning was, "Good morning, Arizona."

PHOENIX (AP) - Mike Tyson was released from jail without bond on a felony drug possession charge Friday after an early-morning arrest in which Buckeye police said they found two bags of white powder in his back pocket.
''He admitted to using today and stated he is an addict and has a problem,'' according to a police probable cause statement filed in Maricopa County Superior Court. ''Mike admitted to possessing bags of cocaine and said he uses any time he can get his hands on it.''
Tyson was arrested early Friday, after nearly ramming a police SUV, on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine when police stopped him shortly after he left a Scottsdale nightclub. According to the report, an officer saw Tyson trying to wipe a white powder off the console of his BMW as he approached.
In court Friday morning, the former heavyweight champ was dressed in an oversized golf shirt, baggy jeans and tennis shoes. He said nothing, periodically tapping his feet or fingers while waiting for the judge to enter. Tyson did not enter a plea and had no lawyer.
No alcohol was found in his system, and a DUI charge was not filed pending toxicology tests.
Under the terms of his release, Tyson must submit to drug and alcohol testing and may not drink or take nonprescription drugs while the case is pending.
He refused comment as he left courtroom. The only comment he made while walking out of jail in the late morning was, ''Good morning, Arizona.''
Sgt. Larry Hall said the boxer was stopped about 1:45 a.m. after his car almost struck a sheriff's vehicle while leaving the club.
''He showed signs of impairment and voluntarily submitted to field sobriety tests,'' said Hall, a member of the Buckeye Police Department who was working in the area as part of a holiday DUI task force.
Hall said the boxer was alone in the car.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Tyson ran a stop sign and almost hit an SUV driven by a deputy.
''He had to slam on his brakes and take evasive action,'' Arpaio said of the officer. ''Luckily, the deputy was alert.''
Arpaio said Tyson was isolated from other prisoners for his own safety while at the county jail.
The sheriff said Tyson has been there before - as a guest talking to juvenile offenders about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
''The irony is he did a great job with these kids - stay away from drugs, don't drink, stay out of trouble,'' Arpaio said.
