Mike Tyson News: George Foreman Thinks Mike Tyson Can Win Again

NewsSource: blackathlete
by Ralph Cooper

HOUSTON, TX.---George Foreman, the oldest world heavyweight boxing champion of all-time,believes he has the plan to manage and train the youngest world heavyweight champion of all-time Mike Tyson back to the championship.

Foreman won the heavyweight title the first time in 1973 with a win over Joe Frazier. At the age of 45 in 1994, he upset Michael Moorer to win the title for the second time.

Tyson won the title for the first time in 1986 defeating Trevor Berbick to become the youngest heavyweight champion of all time at 20. At the age of 38, Foreman thinks Tyson has a chance to win the title a third time.

"I think of potential when I see him now," Foreman told this reporter recently in Houston, Texas. "At 38 or 39 years-old he had a long way to go. He shouldn't be thinking it is all over for him. He needs people around him telling him it is not over. He can still turn things around."

Foreman retired for more than ten years before he made a comeback at the age of 39. He compares his fighting at that age with Tyson's situation currently.

"He is in the prime of his life," Foreman added seriously."People forget. He can comeback. People will still be with him.He shouldn't be thinking it is all over. I started my comeback around the same age."

More quotes available in the extended section of this post (click 'Read More' below).

Foreman praises the job the late Cus D'Amato and Mike Jacobs did managing and training Tyson to the title in his early days. But Foreman claims Tyson is being mismanaged now.

"I have some questions about how he has been managed,"Foreman ripped. "He is being over matched. They are matching with guys much bigger than he is. It is the worst managing job I've seen."

It was when pressed about how he would manage Tyson that Foreman disclosed his desire to also manage and train the former champion.

"Mike Tyson is a great story," George. "He has seen it all. He has experienced the good and bad, great and sad. In his early days his people had him constantly fighting. They had him mentally prepared to fight. He was evenly matched physically and mentally."

Tyson has lost three of his last four fights. He had a title bout with Lennox Lewis. Lewis decked Tyson to keep the title. It is after the Lewis fight where Foreman criticizes the handlers of Tyson.

"Everytime he gets in the ring after Lewis he is fighting as if he is the heavyweight champion," Foreman says. "He is not a champion now. When he was younger and quicker he was able to deal with bigger guys but he was also fighting once or twice a month and then sometimes every two months. He was fighting more often. He has gotten heavier."

Foreman says he felt the Tyson pain when Tyson went to the canvas and later quit on the stool against Kevin McBride in Washington, D.C.,recently.

"He was winning and then he let it get away,"George shared."It looked like he slipped. But it was a slip of millions in dollars in debt. It falls like that sometime on us. His troubles are big. But again he was winning the fight."

The Foreman Plan calls for Tyson to fight lesser talented opponents, stay off television and pay-per-view for awhile. Then after a few wins explode back on the scene with plently of confidence and his skills toned.

"He has to go back to boxing the right way," Foreman said. "After six wins that way come back and go out the right way. He needs to fight guys like him for awhile. Guys his size.Guys who have lost some fights recently. He can come back and hit the big fights again and clear up his debt problems and win again. It is all there for him. I know with the right dedication and surroundings he can do it. I did it. I'm speaking from experience. I can share it with him. I can help him. I want to help him.I'm available to help him.He can get his fight game going the right way again and I can help him."

Foreman also says Tyson will have to take the first step if he would like his help.

"In my time I've never seen a business mismanaged like him," Foreman disclosed. "He has generated billions. The reports are he lost $300 million. Mike Tyson needs a good manager. His personal life is not my business. He can have another chance. He can do it. I will not call him. He can call me if he would like for me to help him. I'm always available at my youth center here in Houston. When I came back I called people. When I wanted to do it the right way I made the calls. Mike has to make the call.I'm available if he calls."

Lovely thought but I think it is over for Mike. If he himself says he no longer has it for boxing, then that is a difficult obstacle to overcome. I would love to see Mike even retire with the NABF championship, but to see Mike hit rock-bottom even further is a tuff call. I thought a long time ago that he should have fought guys his own size. He needs confidence builders, and there is no way that going into a fight with a guy who is 6'6'' that it is not in the back of your mind that the guy is 6'6'' 270 or so, no matter how weak he is. I agree with George, Mike was winning the fight and if he had the "boxing guts," he could have pulled it off. As I have been stating for awhile, get rid of Shelly Finkel if you do come back, Don K. would be a better option, seriously.

This is very intresting, Goerge hit rock bottom before he got his act together mentally...boxing is at least 75% MENTAL, and 25% Phyisical. Mike got his Phyisical side up to some degree but I feel he should not have weighed more than 225lbs at the heavyist, the reason being the Mike is not as young so can not carry the weight effectivly at his age... so a lighter weight would make him more agile and allow him to perhaps go the distance at a good pace which could seriously help him. Mentally Mike wasn't even 10% I think. So altogether Mike was about 25% ready for that Mcbride fight. With George in his corner after reading what George had to say I SERIOUSLY think Tyson can reach up to 80% Readyness again and perhaps even hit 100% for his age...just like George did at 45. If that happens I think Tyson stands a VERY GOOD CHANCE! Considering that Tyson I feel for the Lewis fight was only about 40% ready for it...a 100% Tyson I feel could perhaps rule or come close either way he could easily clear his debts, but he's got to want it!

Mike Tyson's fights ever since Kevin Rooney left his corner had started to rely on overwhelming opponents with strength and power and also KO'ing them with one great punch, this became increasingly obvious after his post prison fights where the skill and tactics from his days with Kevin Rooney had almost vanished. There's no doubt in my mind that if Don King had never presuaded Tyson to fire Kevin Rooney he would have never been beaten from 1985 - 1997 or even 1998. With that said the heavyweight scene today seems lacking a Great Champion and George's comments have really fueled me with hope. George seems to know what he is talking about and I truely feel that Geroge can not only get him back into using SKILL and TACTICS and by not just trying to KO people with one MEGA punch but also I feel George can get Tyson intrested again and build his confidence up. He has got to make Tyson belive that he can do it and even if he is losing to stay disciplined and try his best, with the moto of NO SURRENDER which is exactly the same moto Tyson went in the Ring with before the TREVOR BERBICK fight. Tyson needs to become a distance fighter not just a KO speacialist just like he was in the 80's. And if you feel I am talking 'HYPE', well in that case just look at GEORGE FOREMAN, Champ at 45!

I agree with Foreman about being mismanages but, I think that Mike's heart is not in it to fight then I dont think he will comeback. He has never asked for help before, its just not his way. Why would he start now. My firm belief is that when money gets really tight next year when he has not started doing the missionary work in Africa like he has been quoted saying he wanted to do. He will have a final farewell fight against Holyfield v. Tyson III and pay off his debts. Watch and see there is already buzz about it with Emaneul Steward. It might happen abroud because of licensing problems with both fighters.

Looks to me like Foreman wants to be Tyson's Apollo Creed.

Foreman: ... you had that eye of the tiger, man; the edge! And now you gotta get it back, and the way to get it back is to go back to the beginning. You know what I mean?

Good luck, George. :)

the thing foreman had over tyson was his size and style. tyson needs to get close to opponents and simply does not have the legs or desire to do so. foremans style didnt focus on sharp head movment or getting inside all the time so he could use his size to wear opponents down.
its all over for mike and he knows it

Okay folks perhaps Mike is too small to come back in the Heavyweights at his age, but what is to stop him making an enterance in the LIGHT Heavyweights or even Crusierweights? He will be fighting people his size there are slightly taller so he can easily get close to land the bombs.

I think Mike Tyson is finished. He has some mental issues that he has to deal with before he can come back to the ring and even than I don't think he will be the champion he used to be. Thats just my opinon though.
