Danny Williams News: Profile Bio

News

Boxing is simple - get in the ring and beat the other guy. It should be easy, but then being human gets in the way.

"I used to get so nervous before a fight, I would hardly be able to eat," Danny Williams said. "Sometimes, I would burst into tears because of the pressure. Once, I was at some traffic lights and I could not stop the tears. I had to pretend something was in my eye as people walked passed me.

"It is because of my own expectations of myself. Since I was a boy, I have been told I am going to be heavyweight champion of the world. I want it so badly that when I think something is messing it up, I get so upset that I have smashed stuff up at home thinking about it."

It is Williams' courage and determination that have led him to the WBU, the British and the British Commonwealth heavyweight titles.

The signature fight of Williams' 10-year pro career came on Oct. 21, 2000, in Wembley, England.

A convert to the Islamic faith, Williams was in a frenzied brawl against Mark Potter with the vacant British heavyweight and Williams' own British Commonwealth belts on the line. The London native missed with a right cross and his arm popped out of its socket. While world champions such as Vitali Klitschko have justifiably retired from fights with similar injuries, Williams persisted and continued with the use of just his left arm.

While the referee allowed the bout to continue, many ringsiders begged Williams to quit. Despite the searing pain, Williams began working his jab.

By the sixth round, Williams could not lift his right glove above his waist. Still, he marched on and hoped to pull out a points victory. Potter, egged on by his North London fans, sensed the moment. Like a shark attacking an injured swimmer, the healthy fighter relentlessly pressed the action until a left-hand smash left Potter semi-conscious on the canvas. "I could not believe it when Potter went down after I hit him with that left," Williams said. "I have watched the fight on tape and you can actually see my eyebrows lift up as he hit the canvas. I was totally shocked. I never thought I would knock him out with my right arm like it was."

Danny Williams News: Tyson's opponent promises to raise his game

NewsDanny Williams blames himself for a lackluster boxing career, yet he intends to do something about it.

"I've been undermotivated," he said this week from New York, where he's training for a July 30 fight against Mike Tyson in Louisville. "I've never fought at the highest level, but I'm going to raise my game to the occasion."

The occasion is significant, as Williams well knows. He could defeat Tyson and become a star, or he could lose and slip back into oblivion.

"By any means necessary, I will win this fight," he said. "I believe I have the power to knock him out (and) I'm going to outbox him because of my height.

"I am looking for a war and I'm looking to box him as well."

Williams is 31-3 with 26 knockouts but a three-time loser in the past couple of years because of a questionable chin. As he admitted (in Wednesday's Sun), he was selected for this fight by Tyson's handlers because they expect him to be knocked out by the former heavyweight champion.

Tyson is 50-4 with 45 KOs but has not fought in 18 months. He's training in Phoenix and apparently doing well in spite of reportedly being hampered by back spasms.

Danny Williams News: WILLIAMS HOPES TO STAND TYSON HEAT

News

Danny Williams hopes to avoid the fate which befell one of his chief sparring partners when he steps into the ring against Mike Tyson at the end of the month.

The Brixton heavyweight has enlisted the help of Clifford Etienne to put the finishing touches to preparations for his big night in Louisville on July 30.

The choice of Etienne will have raised some eyebrows. The self-styled 'Black Rhino' charged for precisely 49 seconds towards Tyson in their bout in February last year before ending up flat out on the canvas.

Nevertheless there is obvious merit in working with a come-forward brawler such as Etienne as Williams attempts somehow to figure out a game-plan to combat Iron Mike's own relentless advances.

Williams said: "I'll be having some really good sparring this week and I'm feeling really sharp.

"The gym I'm training in is really hot so I will be ready for the heat of Kentucky."

Danny Williams News: WBU INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION DANNY WILLIAMS

SHOWTIME PPV NATIONAL CONFERENCE CALL

Former undisputed heavyweight champion and current World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 8/World Boxing Association (WBA) No. 10 contender, Mike Tyson, will take his initial step toward reclaiming a world title when he takes on World Boxing Union (WBU) International Champion Danny Williams in a 10-round showdown live on pay per view, Friday, July 30. The TYSON-WILLIAMS pay-per-view telecast from Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky., will begin at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Straight Out Promotions will present the event, which will be distributed by SHOWTIME Pay Per View and carries a suggested retail price of $44.95.

Opening: Do you have some opening comments. How are things going? How is training going?

Williams: I came in two weeks ago, and have been training really hard. I am going to be in fantastic shape. I am just ready to rumble.

Question: What do you think of Mike Tyson these days, and how would you compare him with the Tyson of old?

Williams: Well, obviously, he is not the fighter he used to be. I would say he is probably 40 percent of what he used to be. I think he is one of the greatest heavyweights ever to live, but now I believe he is ready for the taking. He is been out of the ring 16-17 months and I believe I am going take him.

Question: Do you have a plan to try to take Tyson in the later rounds? Or are you going to just see what happens in the ring?

Williams: That is my plan, obviously, to take him to the late rounds. But, as with all fights, you can come with a plan and sometimes things do not work out the way you want them to work out. So whatever happens, I will be ready. I am going to just adjust to whatever comes.
