Mike Tyson News: Mike Tyson visits South Africa for charity event

NewsIn a thrill for local boxing fans, former world champion Mike Tyson arrived in South Africa Tuesday 29 January.

Tyson was in the country to help raise funds for a children's charity at a gala banquet and as part of a series of promotional events.

On Wednesday 30 January Mike Tyson arrived at the Charity Banquet held at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg, South Africa.

On Thursday about 1500 Soweto pupils gathered at their high school in Moletsane to catch a brief glimpse of former world boxing champion Mike Tyson.
The former heavyweight boxer arrived at the school around 12.30pm and spent about 20 minutes holding his fists in the air, walking through the throngs of students and addressing them briefly.

Tyson told the children, who let out screams of excitement, that he knew what conditions they were living in as he had grown up in similar surroundings in the United States.

When asked by one of the girl pupils if he would come back to the school another time, he responded simply: "Yes".

Earlier Tyson had held Mahopo's hand as he walked towards the large group of fans who had gathered in the school's assembly grounds.

"He took my hand. It was so wow. I won't forget this day. I'm never going to wash my hand."

A teacher at the school, Theodore Chabedi, said most of the children knew who Mike Tyson was.

At the hotel, his co-manager Harlan Werner said the trip was a bid to highlight to local and international media the plight of school children in poorer communities like Moletsane.
"It was basically an opportunity to go to a school and bring attention to what the current conditions are. His presence there brought 50 to 65 journalists," he said.
"He [Tyson] wants to encourage kids to stay in school and to overcome their adversity like Mike has.
"Last Sunday Mike was one year sober and drug free," said Werner, adding that the former boxer was looking at raising awareness and funding diverse projects in the country.
These may include an orphanage, a drug rehabilitation centre or a school, said Werner.

On Saturday he attended the boxing tournament 'Fire and Brimstone' (showcasing boxers such as Corrie Sanders and Osborne "Big Daddy" Machimana) where he would be a celebrity commentator.

Mike Tyson News: TYSON-HOLYFIELD 3? -updated

NewsAccording to a recent interview with boxingtalk, former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has hinted at a possible return to the ring for a third fight with 4-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. When asked whether or not he would be interested in possibly fighting Evander Holyfield later this year, Tyson stated, "Sometimes I say yeah it is and sometimes I say it isn't. I'm in one of those up in the air moments. It's something I want to do it all depends on how many tickets (or millions*) are involved."

Tyson went on to reveal that he is working on a movie and autobiography. Regardless Tyson is steadfast in the belief that he can make another run as he states,"I think I am going to go at it hard one more time." Tyson continued,"I just want to get in the gym for 3 months and then see how I feel about it." Regarding Holyfield, Tyson said that "he's the guy for me to fight and I can always get up to fight him. He's the kind of fight that could make me have an affair for boxing again. I don't know if I will fall in love with boxing again, but I am ready to have a love affair for a few months."
On whether Mike would look to knock out Holyfield in a third fight he responded:"That would be my goal. If I get in there with him I'd just be looking to knock him out."

Evander Holyfield acknowledged that both camps are talking about meeting up again.
"There has been some talk between us," Holyfield told The Guardian. "Mike had Jeff Fenech, who's been training him, call me a few months ago. Jeff says Mike wants to fight me again -- but he needs to know if I would agree to it. I said, 'It all depends on what they gonna give us -- because I'm gonna catch a lot of flak if I say I'm fighting Mike Tyson again. I've already said I don't want to fight Mike no more'.
"Jeff says, 'What if Mike gets in proper shape?' I told him that's ok but I can't be part of it if Mike's going to pull out. Jeff said, 'The main thing Mike wants to know is if you would be willing to fight him again?' I said, 'Yeah, if the price is right, I probably would'."

Holyfield told the BBC's Inside Sport programme: "It's up to me as an adult what I want to do.
"Tyson wants to regain his character. I want a good showing, he wants a good showing - so the best man would come out on top."

Boris Grinberg, the manager of WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov (22-0-1, 17KOs), informed BoxingScene that former undisputed champion Mike Tyson will work his fighter's corner on Feb. 23, when he challenges IBF heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko (49-3, 44KOs) in a unification bout at New York's Madison Square Garden. HBO will televise.

Tyson is close friends with Ibragimov, and was slated to work Ibragimov's corner for his bouts with Shannon Briggs and Evander Holyfield. Due to Tyson's legal battles at the time of the bouts, he was unable to attend the events. This time around, he appears to be clear and said to be excited for Ibragimov's big opportunity.

Mike Tyson News: Mike Tyson Released - video

NewsMike Tyson is a free man Wednesday at 9AM local time after serving his DUI sentence in an Arizona jail.

The former heavyweight champ passed time behind bars by reading the mobster epic "American Gangster." The meals served were a bologna 'brunch' and Sloppy Joe's for dinner. Jail officials said Tyson was held apart from the other 1,500 inmates in the open-air jail known as Tent City.

Mike Tyson is resting and spending the holiday with his family after serving the sentence, according to his lawyer, David Chesnoff.

Chesnoff said he has not spoken to Tyson since he was released from jail around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, because he wants to let him rest.

Tyson must also serve three years' probation, perform 360 hours of community service and undergo drug testing.

Mike Tyson News: Mike Tyson reports to jail - video

NewsPHOENIX (AP) — Mike Tyson reported to jail Tuesday, an open-air facility where he'll serve a one-day sentence for a DUI conviction.

The former heavyweight champion will be held in a secluded part of Tent City, apart from the 1,500 other inmates.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he considers Tyson to be a high-risk prisoner and that each one of his fist is a lethal weapon.

Besides the day in jail, Tyson was sentenced to three years' probation. He also must perform 360 hours of community service and undergo drug testing.

Tyson faced a maximum sentence of four years and three months in prison. Prosecutors recommended a one-year sentence, but the judge said the boxer has tried to atone for his crimes.

During a sentencing hearing Monday, Judge Helene Abrams said she was impressed with the boxer's attempts to complete his GED and how he voluntarily sought treatment for drug addiction.

"Sobriety is a lifetime job," Abrams told Tyson.
